The Horizon Zero Dawn Ultrawide Tool (commonly distributed as pre-compiled community patches or applied via third-party software) is designed to fix the cropped 16:9 aspect ratio and blur forced during in-game cutscenes. While the base game natively supports 21:9 and 32:9 resolutions during active gameplay, it forces black pillarboxes (bars) and a heavy blur whenever a cinematic plays.
There are two primary methods to install and apply this ultrawide fix: using the automated community patcher tool or manually modifying the game files via a hex editor. Method 1: Automated Ultrawide Patcher (Recommended)
This community-made tool automatically injects the correct aspect ratio values into your game files without requiring coding knowledge.
Download the tool: Visit the PCGamingWiki Horizon Zero Dawn Patches Page and download the zip archive.
Unpack the archive: Extract the downloaded folder to your desktop. If prompted for a password, use pcgw.
Select your resolution: Open the extracted folder. You will see individual executable patchers named after common resolutions (e.g., 2560x1080, 3440x1440, 3840x1600, etc.). Open the one matching your monitor.
Target your game file: Click Start inside the patcher window. A file explorer pop-up will appear. Navigate to your Horizon Zero Dawn installation directory and select HorizonZeroDawn.exe.
Steam Default Path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Horizon Zero Dawn</code> Run the patch: Confirm the selection to apply the patch.
Adjust In-Game Settings: Launch the game, go to Display Settings, and ensure your Aspect Ratio is set to Auto. Method 2: Manual Hex Edit (Alternative Fix)
If the automated patcher fails due to a recent game update, you can manually force ultrawide cutscenes using a free hex editing tool.
Download a Hex Editor: Download and install a free, verified tool such as HxD Hex Editor.
Backup your game executable: Go to your Horizon Zero Dawn folder. Right-click HorizonZeroDawn.exe, select Copy, and paste it into a safe backup folder.
Open the file in HxD: Launch HxD, click File > Open, and select the original HorizonZeroDawn.exe from your main game directory.
Search for the aspect ratio string: Press Ctrl + R to open the Replace window. Configure the search tab: Select the Hex-values tab. In Search direction, select All. In Search for, type: 39 8E E3 3F
Enter your replacement value: In the Replace with field, type the hex value that matches your monitor’s exact resolution: 2560x1080 (21:9): 26 B4 17 40 3440x1440 (21:9): 8E E3 18 40 3840x1080 (32:9): 39 8E 63 40 3840x1440 (24:9): AB AA 2A 40 3840x1600 (24:10): 9A 99 19 40 5120x1440 (32:9): 39 8E 63 40
Replace and Save: Click Replace All. Save the file (Ctrl + S) and close HxD.
Set to Auto: Launch the game and verify your aspect ratio is set to Auto in the settings menu. Alternative: Flawless Widescreen Plugin Horizon Zero Dawn ultrawide patches
