Mad Dog Math is a highly structured, fast-paced math facts mastery supplement designed to help students achieve instant recall of basic math operations. Developed over a 30-year period by educator Julie Gillis, the program is designed to move children from basic factual accuracy to complete automaticity in about 10 minutes a day.
The multiplication portion focuses heavily on Level 3 (typically 3rd grade and up), which covers multiplication and division facts up to the 12s family. Core Philosophy: Three Levels of Mastery
The system rejects the idea of just “practicing” math and instead focuses on true progression through three specific milestones:
Accuracy: The student can compute the right answer, even if they have to rely on counting on fingers or modeling.
Fluency: The student becomes both fast and accurate in recalling their facts.
Automaticity: The ultimate goal. The student produces the correct answer with zero thought or hesitation, akin to knowing their own name. How the System Works
Bite-Sized Fact Families: Instead of overwhelming a child with a massive grid of numbers, the program breaks the 156 multiplication facts down into small, digestible “fact families”.
Progressive Timed Drills: Students take daily timed drills (ranging from 2 minutes down to 30 seconds as they advance). If a student passes the drill, they graduate to the next level or “Club” the following day. If they do not pass, they repeat the exact same drill until they conquer it.
Self-Paced Motivation: Advanced students can race forward as fast as they are capable, while struggling learners can take their time without holding anyone else back or feeling left behind.
Playful Themes: To keep kids engaged, the curriculum uses dog-breed grouping categories to sort age levels (e.g., “Golden Retrievers” for grades 3–6). Available Formats & Tools
